One of the major concerns that individuals face when venturing out on their own in the business world is the ability to purchase adequate health insurance coverage. In fact, the biggest reason why people are resistant to work for themselves is lack of affordable health and medical insurance. However, there are many places where self employed workers can cut corners to obtain inexpensive insurance that will satisfy all of their coverage needs.

Self employed insurance is specifically meant for individuals who own a private business, or for those who work on their own as freelancers, such as writers, artists, interior designers, and so on. Basic health insurance for self employed workers typically provides coverage for the following:

  • Routine check-ups
  • Hospital and emergency care expenses
  • Prescription medications
  • Vision and dental care

In addition to the types of coverage mentioned above, some self employed health insurance providers also offer extra benefits, including physical therapy, drug and alcohol abuse counseling, hospice care, and various types of alternative health practices. Rather than taking the biggest risk of all by letting yourself or your family go without health insurance, the following options can help make health and medical insurance more affordable if you are self employed:

1. Spousal Insurance Plan
One of the most common ways to obtain cheaper health insurance for self employed workers is by opting to be under a spouse’s employer for coverage. If one person is employed through a company that offers group health insurance plans, it would be the best option to cover the entire family.

2. Temporary Coverage under COBRA
This type of business health insurance is used during the beginning stages of an individual’s self-employment. When individuals leave their place of employment, the employer is required under law to give them the option of retaining membership in their health insurance plan. However, this is only a temporary option, usually for the first few months after a person leaves their job. This is why it’s important for people to continually look for alternative self employed health insurance options while they’re still covered under COBRA.

3. Health Insurance Cooperatives
Due to the lack of affordable insurance plans for individuals who own their own business, many local and national organizations of self-employed workers have united in an effort to combine their buying power. This method allows them to avail affordable health and medical insurance through group policies.

4. Group Health Insurance
There are many states in the U.S. that now offer group health insurance coverage for self employed workers. Along with being cheaper, group health insurance plans must also provide coverage for everyone in the group, regardless of health conditions. This particular feature is especially beneficial for those who may have been previously turned down for an individual policy due to their poor health.

5. Liability Insurance
In this day and age, it’s also just as important to have liability insurance for those who are self employed. This type of insurance is meant to provide the self employed with protection in the event that lawsuits are brought up against them and where they are held liable. Depending on the individual’s particular line of work, there are a few different options to choose from, including general liability insurance, contractors liability insurance, and small business liability insurance. Premiums for the different coverage options are usually based on the type of work which is performed on a daily basis.

Insurance is necessary for everyone, regardless of their occupation. Although individual insurance policies are usually more expensive in comparison to traditional plans, there are ways for self employed workers to avail comprehensive coverage at an affordable price.
